Inspiring young minds

Rebecca recently won a Fluid sponsored Award for Creativity at Newcastle under Lyme College. Part of her award win was to join us for some work experience so she could experience first hand how creative agencies work. Here is Rebecca’s view on how her week with us went:

I was fortunate enough to be offered a work placement at Fluid, who were sponsors for the Outstanding Achievement Award in Art and Design which I attained in my final year at Newcastle under Lyme College. I’ve progress onto studying for a degree in Textile design and branding is a sector I hadn’t before experienced or considered, so I didn’t know what to expect. But with an enthusiasm to learn and willing to experience new challenges within a work environment I was looking forward to the opportunity.

Approaching my placement any questions or queries which I had were responded to promptly, already making me feel eager to start. When arriving at Fluid on my first day I was instantly put at ease and welcomed by all the members of staff in both departments. Feeling settled in my new environment I was briefed on a practical, fast paced project. Which was to brand my own company, alongside the guidance of members of the design team. It also allowed me to develop knowledge in a vast area including marketing, design, and advertising.

Elements of this was created using Photoshop and Illustrator software which I have a moderate amount of experience in and on the occasions when I was unsure on how to create the effect I was hoping to produce staff were more than happy to help and show additional techniques plus short cuts. Which was invaluable and time saving when later designing a variety of logos and products for my chosen company. After each stage staff reviewed what I had completed telling me the strengths as well as some constructive improvement. As well as producing a diverse body of work, I also had the opportunity to sit in on team meetings, plus view previous projects and view the research and development that goes into each project.

Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience and would recommend to any student who is interested in design to undertake a work placement at Fluid. As I have not just learnt valuable skills and experiences but felt welcome and part of the team. And I can’t thank everyone enough for making my experience so enjoyable.
